Historical overview:

  •  The area’s history dates back at least to the 7th century BC 
  •  Excavations were carried out by the French Archaeological School 
  •  A notable find is the Kouros statue discovered in 1896 
  •  The site was active from the Archaic period to the Byzantine era (7th century BC – 5th century AD) 

Role in antiquity:

  •  Important settlement and port 
  •  According to legend, it was the kingdom of Alyki 
  •  The site was abruptly abandoned, likely after a major earthquake 

Major finds & monuments

  • Ancient marble quarry: Used from the Archaic to Byzantine periods – large marble blocks are still visible beneath the sea surface 
  • Sanctuary of Apollo (7th century BC): A worship site on the eastern coast, frequented by marble traders who carved their names into the steps 
  • Two early Christian basilicas (5th century AD): Elevated reception spaces for pilgrims 
  • Ancient settlement: Ruins of an ancient town with visible remnants 
  • Kouros of Alyki (1896): Currently exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Constantinople 

Significance:
One of the richest archaeological complexes in Thassos, offering a unique combination of quarry, sanctuary, settlement, and early Christian monuments in a single landscape.

  •  The peninsula has two beaches (sandy and pebbly), naturally complementing a visit to the site
