Hakkında
Educational and Cultural Association of Potamia Thassos "Polygnotos Vagis"
Founded in 1979, the Association's core mission is the preservation and promotion of the local cultural heritage, the revival of traditional customs, the active involvement of youth in cultural activities, and the safeguarding and utilization of the intellectual wealth of past generations.
The association carries out a broad spectrum of cultural activities through well-organized programs and events:
1) Dance Departments
The Association maintains active dance groups, including:
- Pre-kindergarten group
- Children’s group
- Youth group
- Adult group
With systematic effort, these groups aim to revive and teach traditional dances of the region, regularly participating in local and national events.
2) Art Department
The painting/art department is divided into two categories: children and adults. To date, participants have taken part in three public exhibitions, showcasing their talent and creativity.
The ground floor of the Tarsanas building hosts temporary exhibitions of painting, iconography, sculpture, and other visual arts, featuring works by both local and international artists.
3) Folklore Museum
On the upper floor of the Tarsanas, the Association operates its Folklore Museum, where traditional everyday objects of previous generations are preserved and exhibited.
Visitors can explore authentic reconstructions of interior spaces such as a kitchen, living room, dining area, and bedroom — all furnished with original period furniture and utensils.
4) Library Creation
In recent years, significant efforts have been made to establish a lending library, focusing on books about local history and folklore, particularly works by authors from Thassos.
Highlighted titles include the works of Stavros Vakratsas, such as “Oi Palioi” and “Ta Reziga Chronia”, which vividly depict postwar life on the island through a literary lens.
5) Folk Tradition & Musical Heritage
A major achievement of this year has been the publication and recording of previously unpublished traditional songs of Thassos, performed by women from Potamia.
This unique project connects the voice of the past with the present, ensuring the continuation of our musical identity.
The Educational and Cultural Association of Potamia "Polygnotos Vagis" remains firmly committed to preserving culture, through actions that inspire, unite, and illuminate the collective memory of our local community.
