"In the heart of Limenas, between the port and the slope of the acropolis, lies the Ancient Agora of Thassos. It is one of the most important archaeological complexes in the northern Aegean, with a history spanning nearly nine centuries."

Dating:

  •  The earliest constructions date back to the 6th century BC 
  •  Its final form as an almost rectangular square with colonnades was completed between the 4th century BC and the Roman period (1st century BC) 

Excavations:
Conducted by the French Archaeological School since the early 20th century

Historical Period:
Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods (6th century BC – 3rd century AD)

Role in Antiquity:
The Agora functioned as the political, administrative, religious, and commercial center of the ancient city.
It covered an area of 12,650 m² (approx. 80 x 100 m) and was surrounded by stoas, public buildings, temples, altars, and honorary monuments.

Important Finds / Monuments:

  •  Monumental propylon (1st century AD): main entrance from the closed harbor 
  •  Prytaneion: rectangular administrative building on the north side 
  •  Building with the Archives: inscriptions of officials and public documents (4th century BC – 3rd century AD) 
  •  Cenotaph of Glaucus: dedicated to one of the first Parian settlers and companion of the poet Archilochus 
  •  Sanctuary of Theagenes: Olympic victor worshipped as a healing hero 
  •  Arched hall for the worship of Emperor Hadrian 
  •  Early Christian basilica (5th century AD), built with materials from the Agora 

Significance:
One of the best-preserved examples of an ancient Greek agora, revealing important aspects of the social, political, and religious life of Thassos.
