- Initially served as a venue for theatrical performances during the festivals of Dionysia and Choreia
- During the Roman period, it was converted into an arena for animal fights and gladiatorial games
Key Features:
- Cavea with three stairways dividing it into four sections – its current form dates to the Roman period
- Stage with a marble façade (early 3rd century BC); the proskenion was dedicated to Dionysus by the Thasian Lysistratos and featured 12 Doric columns
- Sanctuary of Dionysus at the foot of the theatre, with votive monuments and altars
Restoration:
After extensive restoration works, the seating was fully reconstructed using white marble from the quarries of Thassos.
