Founded: Around 1090–1110 AD, when the hermit Saint Loukas built the first chapel following a command of Archangel Michael at the spot where holy water sprang forth

History:
Operates as a dependency of the Monastery of Philotheou on Mount Athos
Remained abandoned until 1974, when nuns from Pelion arrived and began restoration works
Today it operates as a female coenobitic monastery
Follows the old liturgical calendar according to the Athonite tradition

Sacred relics:
Holy Nail: A fragment of the nail that pierced the right hand of the Crucified Christ – an offering of Emperor Nikephoros Botaneiates to the Monastery of Philotheou, from where it miraculously reached Thassos
Holy spring “en Gonatais”: A miraculous spring in a cave among the rocks near the sea, below the monastery – access is made on one’s knees

Feast day: November 8 (Feast of Archangel Michael) and Tuesday after Easter

Dress code: Appropriate clothing is required (covered shoulders, long garments)
